Underground is a site-responsive textile installation built around the four stations that frame Soho - Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, Tottenham Court Road and Leicester Square. Each panel translates a specific piece of the network - a train door, an escalator, a platform tunnel - into hand-quilted, embroidered, three-dimensional textile, using materials sourced from fabric stores and building sites rather than anything made for sculpture: garment fabric, deadstock, builders' piping, styrofoam, rope and eyelets.

Suspended at varying depths and heights, the tactile panels shift in perspective as viewers pass, echoing the experience of moving through stations, tunnels and trains. Shifting light evokes passing carriages and changing platforms, transforming familiar elements of the Underground into a heightened material and sensory experience.

At its heart, Underground is about how we experience public space while in motion - and what happens when something familiar makes us stop, look again and notice the environment around us.

It's currently showing at Smallest Gallery in Soho, 62 Dean Street, London W1D 4QF - a historic shopfront viewable only from the street, open 24/7 until mid-October. Supported by the 2026 Eaton Fund.
